Cleo Laine and John Dankworth ~  A Shimmering Union

A few weeks ago, I had the good fortune of being in the audience at the beautiful Hammerson Hall in the Living Arts Centre, in Mississauga, Canada when two legends of the musical world, Dame Cleo Laine and Sir John Dankworth, made a rare Canadian appearance.  Surrounded and supported by the Toronto All Star Big Band, we were treated to an afternoon of music at its very best:  a display of unparalleled skill, spontaneity and great joy.

The opening set featured several members of this very young band whose average age is approximately 18.  From the first bars of the Band’s opening selection, it was clear that we were on a ride of youthful exuberance and passion, even though at times the word “exuberance” took on the meaning of “a bit too loud”.

After several more songs from the wonderful Big Band era, featuring a number of young talented vocalists and some virtuosic instrumental solos, one-half of the “dynamic duo” appeared from the wings. With his inimitable swagger, John Dankworth took to the stage with his beloved saxophone. Listening to him play one could not help but feel as if he were conversing with an old friend.  There was an ease and mutual understanding between artist and instrument as they merged together.  With his unique wit and charm, John shared stories about the genesis of his own compositions and frequently joked with the Band who played along with his gags like seasoned professionals.  Dankworth’s “mini set” ended all too soon with the announcement that both he and Dame Cleo would be returning after intermission.

What a buzz outside in the foyer!  People were moved and energized, eagerly awaiting the second set.  Once we had settled back into our cozy seats (and after another group of short solos by the band), we were finally able to witness the tremendous and ingenious artistry of one of our last living musical legends - Dame Cleo Laine.

As she made her entrance on stage with grace and poise it was clear that Cleo Laine was not only in full command of this show, but also in full command of her musical intention – to play and have fun!  At 82 and still in glorious voice she opened herself up the moment she started to sing – like a musical treasure box of infinite wonder and delight.  Over the next 40 minutes, she took us to depths and heights, sailing through poignant ballads with great emotional purpose, engaging in the most fantastic musical conversations with her husband - and all with tremendous ease.  Such ease, in fact, that it seemed at times to be “mere child’s play”, full of instinctive and spontaneous joy.

Wonderful personal anecdotes about her life as a young singer in John’s band and witty stories about her and John’s musical adventures together were glimpses into a life full of zest, revealing the rare and unique relationship these two people share.

Each of these incredible artists can fly alone, but when they come together and begin to improvise on melody and rhythm, their musical souls unite in a most breathtaking way.  It is clear that the natural harmonies and rhythm of their love and companionship have transcended their day-to-day life together and taken them to other realms of communicating.

Cleo and John’s music making is more than artful collaboration and more than a mere demonstration of exceptional skill and abilities.  It is a passionate musical union that shimmers in the delicate balance of listening and responding to one another with great love and understanding.

It was a rare treat to be witness such a remarkable performance and I count myself lucky to have had the pleasure and privilege of hearing them live on stage once again.   I left Hammerson Hall deeply inspired and grateful to be part of a tradition that allows us to uplift one another by sharing ourselves through music.
