It
seems there are very few arts, if any, that Sarah Slean has not mastered.
She is an accomplished painter and has now published her
second book of poetry. She has received two nominations for Juno Awards,
Canada’s top music prize and twice been nominated for a Gemini Award, the
Canadian television industry’s equivalent of an Emmy Award. Yet she retains a
genuinely modest attitude concerning her talents and when asked about her
outstanding vocal range, she merely shrugs it off by saying, “Some days I do
better than others.”
The Baroness is an apt title for Slean’s current album as it identifies her with the person she becomes on stage. “It started when I made Night Bugs. On the back of that album, I am in a red dress. When I would step into that suit, it would make me bigger and stronger. I morphed into so much more. It became a symbol of what art making is, of what your imagination can give birth to, and how it can transform you. Art is really alchemy. It is making something out of nothing. That really amazes me. She (The Baroness) is like a northern star, reminding me of how miraculous art making is,” says Sarah Slean.
